Warning: I will be preaching from a soapbox about safety below.

We believe strongly in having a baby strapped in during airplane rides, in their own seat. It is IMPOSSIBLE to hold a baby safely in your lap during severe turbulence. Also turbulence can hit the airplane with no warning. Before you have time to think, or tighten your hold on the baby, she is on the ceiling. This is for real. We encountered one hit of severe turbulence on the plane ride from Nanchang to Guangzhou and I'm glad our baby was strapped into a car seat when it happened.

You cannot buy car seats in China (at least I never saw them) so you have to buy one here and ship it to yourself in China. We did this. We bought a basic car seat in the US, repacked it in its original box with bubble wrap, then mailed it to our hotel in Nanchang. See my other detailed description about how to do the mailing.

We were very happy we took the trouble to get a car seat for the plane flights. Our baby was much more comfortable, and safer, and we were more comfortable too on the long flights
